Spring Garden

We have started to plant our Spring garden! Unfortunately last season ended abruptly with aphids attacking several plants. This season we are trying some techniques we learned at Tanaka Farms to avoid this problem. So far we have planted broccoli,  onions, carrots, zinnias,  and cilantro. Each child will be able to help out at least once a week, learning all the skills needed to keep a garden.

January Update

Our Zucchini plants ended up not producing any more and withered and died as the weather grew colder. We harvested a handful of radishes and we continue to watch our beans, carrots and lettuce grow. Our bean plants have flowers and our lettuce is just about ready to pick. Can't wait!

Week 5 and 6

The Children have been watering and watching our garden grow. The Infants planted some chives, broccoli, parsley, dill, and cilantro this past week to start their garden off. We also harvested our first zucchini this week and will be tasting and selling some at our farm stand , (AKA the front office ; ). Zucchini for $1 or $2 each. Pea plants, radishes, and carrots are growing, but we have only had a few heads of lettuce begin to grow and very slowly at that. Next week we will be planting another row of lettuce, radishes, and carrots. The kids have been having fun, but not much work to do yet as our garden is not being affected by any weeds. So for now we continue to watch it grow, water and wait, wait, and wait some more....

Week 4

We are experiencing some difficulties with our crops. Only a few of the lettuce seeds and a little more than a dozen of our carrots have sprouted shoots. Our Zucchini's are producing more and more and we should be ready to pick our first few next week. We have replanted peas and radishes this week and hopefully we will see more growth this time. Sorry no pictures again this week. I have been photographing this week so there will be pictures on next weeks post.

Week 3

Between the rain and our field trip we did not photograph our progress this week. Our radishes, snow peas and lettuce are now well out of the ground and our first zucchini are almost ready to pick. Yay!

Week 2

This week we saw some of our crops begin to peek through the dirt, we have carrot, radish and snow pea shoots visible. We watered our garden and planted more carrots, cilantro and lettuce, as well as some zinnias to beautify under our fig tree. This coming week we will be focusing on weeding and watering and continue to photograph our progress. The zucchini's plants are blooming and producing, our first vegetables of the fall will be ready soon!

Week 1

We are well into developing our Fall garden. So far we have planted zucchini, carrots, lettuce, sugar peas, radishes, and cilantro. Your children have learned how to put on gloves, how to prepare the soil for planting, the use of a hoe, shovel and rake, the planting of seeds and watering. As our crops grow they will learn about harvesting, weeding and pruning. Our garden is already producing Zucchini and our next crops will begin to be ready in mid-October. Here are some pictures of this weeks work (I didn't have my camera on one of the days so there are many children not pictured). The Infant and Toddler Community will begin their garden next week. Please keep checking in each  week to see our hard work and watch our garden grow.
